Special Events

Whatever the season, there’s a reason to celebrate in West Chicago. Family-friendly events, coordinated by community volunteers and organizations in cooperation with the City of West Chicago bring people together to share an experience that’s distinctly West Chicago!

Festival season kicks off in May with West Chicago's annual Blooming Fest garden festival. A perennial favorite, this event is a wonderful way to celebrate spring and launch the community into summer.  Blooming Fest combines the West Chicago Garden Club's popular plant sale with a car show, children's activities, live music, great food, art and crafts and fun for the whole family.

In July we celebrate our rich history as a railroad town with one of our largest and most popular festivals, Railroad Days. This four-day celebration offers an incredible line-up of free entertainment, great food, craft and merchant vendors, an awesome assortment of carnival rides and games and the ever-favorite Railroad Days Parade. Coming on the heels of the 4th of July, Railroad Days takes on additional significance as it reflects the industry, pride and diversity of the American people.

One of the ways that we embrace and celebrate that diversity is through our Viva Mexico Independence Day Festival in September.

Organized by the Mexican Cultural Center DuPage, the festival is a dazzling feast for the senses, offering delicious food, non-stop music, colorful and vibrant folk dances, Miss Mexican Heritage and her court, dancing horses, breath-taking authentic costumes representing the different states of Mexico and, of course, a parade.  A particularly significant and emotional part of the celebration is the reenactment of El Grito de la Independencia or The Cry of Independence, which commemorates the ringing of the bells that signaled the beginning of the revolt against the Spanish rule.  The climax of the festival, and the children’s favorite, is a 13’ burro piñata created by local craftsman Victor Arellano which is hoisted 30 feet in the air by a crane before the string is pulled and the street is showered with candy and toys.

In early December we bundle up and usher in winter and the holidays with Frosty Fest. This winter classic features a spectacular tree lighting, holiday treats and crafts, live reindeer and ice sculptures. People can get into the holiday spirit to the sound of jingle bells while riding on a horse-drawn trolley through the luminaria-lit historic district or take the little ones to share their holiday wish list with Santa and Mrs. Claus. And, of course, there’s a parade.  If you haven’t noticed yet, here in West Chicago, we love a parade!

These special events not only bring our residents and guests together to celebrate the City and the seasons, but they represent the very fabric of our community, uniting the civic, educational, business, social and volunteer organizations that make these festivals possible.
